Kelana Purba has been touted as one of the giants of the Dikir Barat scene in Singapore. With many accolades and wins to their name, Kelana Purba has established itself and has gained a significant following amongst Malay youths and the general dikir barat activists. Kelana Purba is known for constantly pushing the boundaries and limits of artistic performance, through introducing and infusing new and various creative elements into their performances, skilfully balancing it with the traditional art form.
Established since 9 May 1990 (hence 90590), the group that started out as a combined group of boys from Bedok View Secondary School and Tanjong Katong Technical Secondary School, then subsequently saw an exponential increase in membership and following, is still going strong. Kelana Purba is not just a dikir barat group, it is a family of different personalities and characters, united by a common love for the performing art. The strong sense of camaraderie and brotherhood amongst members of Kelana Purba is undeniable and continues to serve the group well.
Kelana Purba may have already reached 21 years of existence but there is still a long way to go, much more yet to learn and more friendships to be forged!
To many, many more years ahead!
